Capturing Cosmic Magic: My Adventure with the Enigmatic Penumbral Lunar Eclipse

Bucerias, Nayarit, Mexico | Travel photography

Everyone is talking about the upcoming total solar eclipse that will take place at the Moon’s ascending node on Monday, April 8, 2024, visible across North America and dubbed the Great North American Eclipse. And if you can get somewhere in the path of it, you will be in for a treat.

I unfortunately will not be in Mazatlan, which is the first location in North America where you can see the totality of it at 12:07pm CT as projected by NASA.

HOWEVER, noone really talked about the cool Penumbral Lunar Eclipse that happened on March 24, 2024 at 1:12am CT.  Many of you might not even know what that is. I know I didn’t so thanks to my faithful googling skills I found out : it is something that occurs when the Sun, Earth and the Moon are imperfectly aligned. When this happens, the Earth blocks some of the Sun’s light from directly reaching the Moon’s surface and covers all or part of the Moon with the outer part of its shadow. The results are magical and were definitely worth staying up way late. Check out these images I took as the Moon was rising starting at 9:10pm CT and all the way through until 1:12am CT when it was imperfectly perfectly misaligned and a few hours until the end at 3:32am. You can see this in the timelapse videos I caught.

Enjoy!

And and by the way…….

Well as you may have guessed by now– Puerto Vallarta will get a partial solar eclipse. Check back in to see what I have to share for you then!

See you soon.
